History
Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Sciences (DSB) of the University of Padova.
The DSB is part of the School of Medicine, where most of of the faculty has its teaching activity, and of the School of Sciences. Its research activity has a common goal, bringing the understanding of molecular and cellular processes to the higher level of the human body, thus allowing deeper insight into physiological functions and pathogenesis of human diseases. For this purpose, the Department homes internationally renowned scientists with expertise ranging from single molecule structural prediction and analysis to the integration in cell biology studies, up to whole body studies in human volunteers and athletes (for details see ‘Research Area’).
The DSB was top ranked in both National Research Assessments (Valutazione Qualità della Ricerca, VQR) carried out by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, MUR (2015-2019, 2020-2024) and recently won the “Department of Excellence” Competitive Funding of MUR (in Biology, 8 Departments across the country were funded). Overall, the DSB has a Research Budget from National and International public and private funding bodies: EU, University of Research, bank foundations, Telethon-Italy and Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC). Recently, in the research schemes funded by the Italian Recovery Plan (PNRR), the Department Chair is the President of the only biomedical National Center (the National Center on Gene Therapy and RNA-based Therapies), that groups 47 public and private research entities and private companies and received a funding of 320-M€. Overall, the DSB participates in various PNRR-funded research initiatives, for a total funding of 26-M€.
The DSB is equipped with state-of-the-art research instrumentation, which are detailed in the relative section. Undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate teaching is a primary task of the Department. All faculties are involved in teaching biomedical subjects (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Histology, Physiology, Sport Sciences, Mechanisms of Diseases, Pathophysiology) in Bachelor and Master degrees and in the M.D. and in Ph.D. programs. The Department acts as coordinator of two Bachelor’ degree courses, i.e. Physical Exercise Science and Biology of Human and Environmental Health, the latter in collaboration with the Departments of Biology and Molecular Medicine @UNIPD, and those of University of Bologna, both attracting European and extra-European students.
As we believe that training is key in shaping future scientists, our Department provides the opportunity for students to graduate in top level laboratories. In addition, our Ph.D. school hosts graduate students of several nationalities in a dynamic and collaborative scientific environment.
A dedicated administrative staff efficiently supports Department's academic, research and teaching activities, and is an invaluable contributor to the excellent performance of the Department. This team is also involved in the management of financial issues, personnel and the departmental facilities.
The Department’s Chair is supported by the administrative staff and 5 specific committees dedicated to the various aspects of the department’ life (Research, Teaching, Public Engagement, Scientific Communication, Common Facilities and Laboratory Space Allocation).
